A police officer was killed and a conscript was injured when masked gunmen attacked a police vehicle in North Sinai's Arish city on Friday morning, a source at the Interior Ministry said.

Officer Ahmed Mahmoud Abul Enein and conscript al-Sayed Ibrahim al-Gazzar were shot as the gunmen fired a rocket-propelled grenade at them, the source said in a statement on Facebook.

The two were transported to Cairo in a military aircraft and the injured policeman was transferred to a military hospital for treatment.

A military funeral will be held for Abul Enein in his hometown in Daqahliya's Menyat al-Nasr.

Security forces intensified their efforts to locate and arrest the perpetrators.
