The European Union is increasing aid to the Central African Republic, where it says conditions are "rapidly deteriorating."

The EU Commission said Thursday that it will boost aid to the CAR by $6.1 million to support life-saving activities such as providing water and shelter and the distribution of food.

Witnesses say the CAR has sunk into widespread lawlessness since the rebel coalition Seleka toppled President Francois Bozize in March. Unrest and violence have displaced more than 200,000 people, and many food stocks have been looted.

The EU's additional aid will bring its total emergency funding for the CAR this year to more than $15 million.

EU Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva, who is visiting the CAR with U.N. Emergency Relief Coordinator Valerie Amos, said Thursday that European aid is not enough and called on other donors to help the CAR's four million people.

The EU's additional aid is subject to approval by the European parliament later this month.
