Southern Africa: Cosafa Cup 2013 - Day 8 Wrap

Hosts Zambia and Lesotho have won through to the semi-finals of the COSAFA Cup Zambia 2013 after winning their quarterfinal matches on Sunday.

Zambia defeated Mozambique 3-1, while earlier in the day Lesotho needed spot-kicks to advance past Angola.

Lesotho booked a semi-final meeting with Zimbabwe on Wednesday when they defeated the Angolans 5-3 on penalties after the teams had played to a 1-1 draw.

The Crocodiles were without influential skipper Moitheri Ntobo after he failed to recover in time from a rib injury, and were on the back foot for much of the first half.

It was Palancas Negras who had the lead with a contender for Goal of the Tournament from forward Mabululu.

He dispossessed a defender and sent a 25-yard volley swerving into the net, leaving the Lesotho goalkeeper with no chance.

Lesotho were level just before the break though, Thapelo Tale tapping home to stun the Angolans.

That goal seemed to spur the Crocodiles on though and it was they who did most of the running in the second period.

But neither side could find a winning goal and the match was left to be decided by penalties, with Mano missing his spot-kick for Angola to send Lesotho though.

The second match of the day saw Zambia comfortably ease past Mozambique after taking a 2-0 lead by halftime.

Festus Mbewe was upended in the Mambas box to earn Chipolopolo a penalty that was converted by rising star Bornwell Mwape.

And they doubled their advantage on 28 minutes when Jimmy Chisenga's cross found its way into the back of the net, with Mozambique goalkeeper Cossa off his line.

Chisenga may suggest he was going for goal, but it looked as though he was trying to put the ball into the six-yard box.

Having had a goal disallowed for offside, Zambia did make it 3-0 when Moses Phiri netted with a low volley to give the scoreline an emphatic look.

Mozambique were not done yet though and Apson Manjate scored an absolute cracker to pull a goal back, connecting with an overhead-kick from just about the edge of the penalty-area for what must be another contender for Goal of the Tournament.

And so the quarterfinal line-up is complete, Zimbabwe will meet Lesotho in Ndola on Wednesday (kick-off 17h00), while South Africa will take on Zambia at the same venue later in the evening (20h00).

In the Plate competition, Malawi will face Angola in their semi-final on Tuesday in Kitwe (kickoff 15h00), while Namibia tackle Mozambique (17h00).

Great players of the past should be remembered. Does anyone know where the late Bizwell Phiri was laid to rest?
