Somalia: Silanyo Announces Another Major Govt Shake-Up

Somaliland regional President Ahmed Silanyo has appointed 17 new departmental heads and removed five from their posts in the second major government shake-up in two weeks, Somaliland Press reported Thursday (July 11th).

The move touches on many of the region's ministries, including new director-generals for the Ministries of Water Resources, Labour and Social Affairs, Industry, Youth, Sports and Tourism, Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation, Health, Commerce, Posts and Telecommunications, Justice, Public Works and Housing and Transportation, Re-settlement and Rehabilitation.

On June 25th, Silanyo made the most significant changes to his cabinet since he rose to power in 2010, expanding it from 33 to 45 members and creating two new ministries. Political analysts criticised the move for creating a strain on the region's resources to make only minimal political changes to appease clans.
