Liberia: U.S.$295,000 Contract Unexplained

Youth and Sports Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe was stopped from defending his ministry's budget Thursday until he can provide information on the status of US$295,000 contract signed with the West Africa Architecture and Construction Company.

The contract was intended for the construction of a Wind Bridge on the Buchanan highway. Wind Bridge is an equipment used to weight heavy duty trucks. The deal was signed during the administration of Mr. Nagbe.

The House of Representatives' Committee on Ways, Means and Finance presiding over the hearing stopped the Youth and Sports Minster from defending his Ministry's budget and asked him to return on Monday with all necessary documents regarding the contract.

The Budget Committee revealed that while serving as Minister of Transport, Minister Nagbe entered into an agreement with the West Africa Architecture and Construction Company for the construction of a Wind Bridge on the Buchanan highway.

The Committee said it has been hinted that money for the construction of the bridge was paid 100 percent to Minister Nagbe, but noting was done until his transfer to the Youth and Sports Ministry.

Construction works for the bridge should have lasted for 90 days and three months, but noting tangible has been done since the money was paid.

The Committee has cited Transport Minister Tornorlah Varpilah to appear with Minister Nabge next Monday.

Minister Varpilah is to appear at the budget hearing to provide clarity whether he is aware of the contract signed by Minister Nagbe.
