Egypt: Islamist Preacher Sentenced to Three Years for Insulting Christianity

An Egyptian court sentenced Islamist preacher Ahmed Abdullah, known as Abu Islam, to three years in prison on Monday for insulting Christianity.

It granted him the option to pay EGP 10,000 bail for a temporary suspension of the sentence.

The court sentenced Abu Islam to 11 years in June for tearing up a bible, insulting religions and threatening public peace.

The defendant was also accused of exploiting religion to promote extremist ideologies which stir tension, insulting the Christian faith, harming national unity and threatening national security.

The plaintiff submitted footage to the general prosecutor of the Islamist preacher insulting religions on a religious channel.
