Sudan: Armed Murle Gunmen Kill Four People Amid Cattle Raid in Twic East County

Wang'ulei — Residents told New Sudan Vision that the raid occurred on the night of Sunday, July 14, 2013, when an armed group of Murle raiders attacked Pator cattle camp in Twic East County, killing 4 people and raiding cattle belonging to Ayual community in Wanglei Payam.

One of the gunmen died amidst raiding, bringing the total number of people killed to 5.

Fortunately, the cattle owners and the neighboring Dachuek community residents who were in Dong cattle camp later rescued more than 130 cattle from the Murle raiders.

The New Sudan Vision reached out for official confirmation by contacting Twic East County Commissioner, Mr. Dau Akoi Jurkuch, who is currently outside the country on an official visit.

"There was attack in Pator cattle camp at about 9 pm local time and 4 people were killed," the commissioner told New Sudan Vision over the telephone.

Mr. Dau Akoi Jurkuch is currently in the United States on an official visit after he was invited to attend the 2013 annual conference, which was organized by the leadership of the Twic East Community in the United States. He continues to receive briefings while he is away.

The commissioner said that the "one body identified to be that of Murle raiders is in custody."

From talking to residents and the commissioner, The New Sudan Vision learned that the cattle were rescued some hours after the raiders had chased them to a place called Quadiang.

Those same accounts revealed that there was no further fighting after the raiders realized that the rescuers had already caught up with them. They ran and left the cattle, said the residents.

Both the Pator of Ayual and Dong of Dachuek cattle camps are located in the eastern part of Twic East County in Jonglei State.

In a separate reprisal attacks, the state of Jonglei also suffered heavy casualties last week after ethnic communities of Lou-Nuer and Murle clashed in Pibor.

Hundreds of those wounded during the Lou-Nuer and Murle fighting are now being treated at Bor Teaching Hospital.
