Cairo — Hundreds of supporters of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi have clashed with security forces in Cairo.

An arterial route through the capital was temporarily blocked by protestors who hurled rocks.

Police used tear gas to drive them back.

The clashes came following US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns's declaration that Egypt had been given a "second chance" to create a democracy.

Burns actually met Egypt's new interim leaders but was snubbed by other key groups including Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Supporters of the ousted president refuse to join a new government. They believe Mohammed Morsi must be reinstated.
