Teachers have defied a return-to-work-order issued yesterday by the government. A spot check in public schools in Nairobi have revealed that both teachers and students are not present.
This is despite a directive from Education Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi stating that teachers who do not report back to work this morning will be deemed to have absconded duty.
The Education Secretary told teachers who are currently on a four week strike to go back to classes by today or face disciplinary actions.
He said teachers who do not comply with the directive risk losing their jobs. Kaimenyi further said parents should ensure that students report to school at 8am today.
On Sunday Knut officials also rejected an appeal by President Uhuru Kenyatta's to call off their strike. They vowed to hold their ground until the government honours its pledge to implement a return-to-work formula by fully paying their dues. Top Knut chiefs said they will not accept the government offer to settle their demands in two phases.
"The national executive council has sat down to deliberate on the offer by the government, and I am on instructions to say that we would like to see an improvement on the offer," Knut secretary general Madzo Nzili said. But Nzili said Knut's is willing and ready to negotiate in a bid to find a lasting solution to the stalemate.
