Kenya: Woman Charged, Held in Acid Case

A woman who burned her husband with acid was charged in court yesterday.

Vernicia Ruguru allegedly poured acid on her husband Patric Njue on Tuesday in Embu North district. Njue is now blind.

Embu Police boss Gasper Makau said Ruguru took their children to school in the morning and returned home.

She quarrelled with her husband over an unknown issue before the pouring the acid on him.

Rugury allegedly locked the bed room door before she rushed to Kibugu police post where she told the police that Njue had locked himself in a room and was trying to commit suicide.

The police went to the house and opened the door to find Njue groaning in pain.

He had blisters on his face.

Ruguru denied the charges before Embu chief Magistrate Margaret Wachira and asked to be released on bail.

However Prosecutor Mulamula Imbwaga opposed the bail application saying the police had not yet completed their investigations.

He said Njue is in a critical condition at the Embu Provincial General Hospital and they have not been able to record a statement from him.

Imbwaga said the acid also needs to be analysed before the hearing of the case.
