Kenya: Dam Sparks Off Debate

STAKEHOLDERS in Isiolo yesterday opposed the construction of a dam on Ewaso Nyiro river until an independent environmental impact assessment is done.

The construction has been proposed by the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation. Speaking during a meeting at Range Land Resort, Waso Trust Land coordinator Hassan Shano and Kivulini Trust boss Hussein Adan said the construction of the dam will lead to complex and interconnected environmental disruptions.

Hussein said the dam will harm the delicate ecosystem. Ward representatives left the meeting and said the county government was not involved during the inception of the multibillion shilling project.

Ali Galgalo (Chari) Abdi Sora (Garba Tulla) and Nura Diba (Sericho) asked the NWCPC to halt the project until consultations are done. Galgalo said the project will deprive the communities living downstream of water.
