The World Food Programme (WFP) in Djibouti has received the first part of a $4-million (719-million franc) contribution from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to aid rural populations experiencing food insecurity caused by drought, WFP announced in a press release Tuesday (July 16th).
The funds will go towards replenishing WFP's stocks of yellow split peas and vegetable oil. Other necessary foodstuffs are being purchased by USAID's Office of Food for Peace and are expected to arrive in Djibouti in November.
"This contribution will be absolutely vital in meeting the humanitarian needs of Djibouti's rural poor, whose ability to cope has been battered by several years of drought," said acting WFP Country Director Imad Khanfir. "It is especially crucial to receive this support now, as July is the start of the three-month lean season."
