Abuja — Nigeria is to withdraw some troops from the UN peacekeeping force in Mali, Ivory Coast President and head of the regional group Ecowas Alassane Ouattara has said.

The troops are needed at home to tackle militant Islamists, he said.

Nigeria has some 1,200 soldiers in Mali but now it is not clear how many Nigerian troops will stay in the region.

The Nigerians are part of a force of 12,600 African troops who took over from a French-led mission on July 1.
