Statement over teachers' strike as Kenya union officials walkout of the negotiations early July.

THE Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers three-phased deal agreed earlier on with government has since been reviewed to a two-phase pay out.

This was done after the Kenya National Union of Teachers on Wednesday struck a deal with government that reduced the pay out period to two-phased to be paid in 12 months.

Kuppet secretary general Akello Misori yesterday said the review had been done.

Misori said: "It is only the pay period that was different, otherwise the agreement Knut signed is the same as ours."

Knut had held out in the 22 days strike while Kuppet called off the strike on July 2 and later on signed a Sh16.2 billion three-phased harmonised commuter allowance deal.

Knut called for the strike to demand the remaining three allowances: house, medical and commuter- as contained in legal notice 534 of 1997.

The demand is worth Sh46 billion.

Knut wanted a 10 per cent commuter allowance based on teacher's basic salary while Kuppet was demanding a harmonised commuter allowances in line with other civil servants.

Kuppet said it got a harmonised commuter allowance of Sh16.2 billion for teachers but Knut said Kuppet got Sh11 billion.
