Statement over teachers' strike as Kenya union officials walkout of the negotiations early July.

Kenya's Industrial Court Monday (July 22nd) charged two leaders of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) with contempt of court for their failure to meet a deadline to call off a teachers' strike, Kenya's The Standard reported.

KNUT Secretary General Mudzo Nzili and Chairman William Sossion were each ordered to pay a 500,000-shilling ($5,734) fine or serve a 30-day jail term.

The Kenya Teachers' Service Commission initiated contempt of court proceedings against Nzili and Sossion when they failed to follow a court order to call off the teachers' strike by July 2nd.

The court case could not be withdrawn even though the four-week strike was called off Wednesday, as the ruling was already being written, said State Counsel Mawangi Njoroge, according to Kenya's Business Daily Africa.
