A delegation from the United Nations University's Institute for Natural Resources in Africa arrived at the African Development Bank's temporary relocation agency offices in Tunis on Monday, July 22, on a three-day mission.
The delegation, led by the Institute's Director, Elias Ayuk, will hold talks with the senior management of the Bank about continuing collaboration between the two organizations regarding the protection of Africa's natural resources and the promotion of a green economy.
During the visit, Ayuk will give a presentation on "Enhancing Capacities for Managing Africa's Natural Resources" on Wednesday, July24, to the Bank's Senior Management and staff.
Founded in 1986, the Institute is one of 15 institutes of the United Nations University and is the only one based in Africa. Its headquarters are in Accra, Ghana, and it has five operation units in African universities in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Namibia, Senegal and Zambia.
Through its close collaboration with Africa's leading universities and research bodies, the Institute contributes to the sustainable development of the continent's natural resources. Its work helps maintain the quality of the natural environment and mitigate the effects of climate change.
The African Development Institute at the Bank has been working closely with the UN University's Institute since 2012 on capacity-building activities.
The mission comes after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the United Nations University and the African Development Bank Group in June 2013, which was signed by the President of the Bank, Donald Kaberuka, at the University's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
The main purpose of the MoU is to facilitate collaboration between the two organizations on matters of common interest.
In particular, those matters include supporting public and private sector capacity development within the Regional Member Countries of the Bank in Africa, and to encourage knowledge exchanges between the two organizations on areas of common interest and expand knowledge-sharing activities such as economic and sector works, partnership events and training and conferences.
