President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday gave cash reward to six members of Nigeria's 4x400 relay team that won Gold Medal at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, with each of them receiving N5 million, while their coaches got N7 million each.

Members of the team include Clement Chukwu, Jude Monye, late Sunday Bada represented by his wife, Adesumbo, Fidelis Gadzama, Aniefiok Udobong and Nduka Nwanze, while the coaches are Innocent Egbunike and Solomon Abare.

The team was in 2000 declared as the second best with silver medal after the games; hence taking second position after United States that was given the Gold Medal. But the US team was indicted of testing positive to drugs which prompted the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to award the Gold Medal to Nigeria.

Representative to the IOC, Engr Habu Gumel presented the medals to the athletes at an award ceremony held for them before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday.

President Jonathan, while announcing the cash gift to them also promised that they would all be given a national honours in due course.

The president who condemned cheating in all spheres "whether in sports, or in academics, in business or in politics" said, "Be informed that malpractice in any form is evil to society. We must build a society that puts premium on integrity and transparency and hard work."
