Officers from Kenya's Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Monday (July 22nd) arrested an immigration officer for accepting a 20,000-shilling ($229) bribe from a member of the public applying for a passport, Kenya's The Standard reported.
EACC Communications Officer Jecinta Wagereka said the arrest followed a directive from new EACC Director Jane Waikenda urging officers to improve screening of immigrants to ensure that potential threats to national security cannot enter the country. The directives came after it was found that some officers had been letting immigrants enter the country illegally.
"This is part of integrity testing recently initiated by the director of immigration service," Wagereka said.
Border security officer Edward Kabiu Njau was charged last week for assisting Nigerian Eneke Chimenze in illegally entering the country on July 9th. Chimenze had previously been deported with Nigerian drug dealer Anthony Chinedu.
