Liberia: China Targets U.S.$16 Million for SKD Renovation

Youth and Sports Minister Lenn Eugene Nagbe says the People's Republic of China will shortly renovate the Samuel K. Sport Complex in Paynesville City at an estimated cost of US$16 million.

The sports minister who disclosed this over the weekend said a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two governments was signed in Monrovia recently. He said he signed for the Liberian government and Chinese Ambassador Zhao Jianhua signed for the PRC.

He said during the renovation works at the Sports Complex, the Ministry of Youth and Sports which is currently located at the facility will be relocated but did not state where the Ministry will move.

He said the renovation work will cover the playing pitch, re-lighting, new score board, reconditioning of the sound system, bathrooms, and offices and of others facilities".

This will be the second time the People's Republic of China will be renovating the Samuel K. Doe Sports since its construction in 1986 by slain Liberian president Samuel K. Doe.

The first renovation work of the Sports Complex was In 2004 during the two and was turnover to the President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's administration in July 2007 by the government of PRC.

It was a Chinese Company called Human Constructing Engineering Group Corporation, one of China's top 60 constructors and design firm carry on the renovation work at the cost believe to be around US$22 million.
