Liberia: Veto Political Parties Bill - ANC Tells Pres. Sirleaf

The national chairman of the Alternative National Congress (ANC) says the much publicized Democratic Sustainability Bill which was passed by the 53rd National Legislature but is currently awaiting President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's signature is a complete recipe for disaster.

Mr. Lafayatto E. O. Gould, of the newly formed political party that has been certificated by the National Elections Commission (NEC) said the bill is not in the best interest of the Liberian people and it is also a waste of the country's resources.

He said the amount (US$2million) set aside in the national budget for 2013 and 2014 by the 53rd National Legislature should be used to complete uncompleted schools and health centers that are lying in ruins.

"Why is it that we cannot say let us build more hospitals with the money; let us supply clean and safe drinking water throughout our country, let us build super highways, let us empower our youth and farms with said money instead of giving it to political parties," he asked.

At the same time, the ANC Chairman said his party has joined the country's political landscape with what he called 'doing things differently' apart from other political parties including the ruling Unity Party ways of doing things politically, economically, socially, financially among others.

He said the ANC is trying to be visible throughout the country by setting up braches of the party in every county of Liberia, stating that the ANC is a better alternative for the people of Liberia.

Speaking further, Chairman Gould noted that the security of the state is poorly equipped because the ruling Unity Party's administration is not sensitive to the wellbeing and welfare of security personnel and not putting enough money into security institutions.

"Our entire security apparatus including the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL), the National Coast Guard, The Liberia National Police (LNP), the Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization (BIN), among others are poorly equip around the country," he noted.

He added that at present the total number of the country's security is still less than seven thousand men and women and according to him has lot of deflections, asserting that the strength of the AFL is less than two thousand.

He described the alleged poorly equipped security apparatus as a risk, promising that if the ANC took the mantle of authority of Liberia as a ruling political party it will mitigate said risk.

Mr. Gould said the ruling Unity Party government for the past seven years has faced two main factors which he said are essential to the development and growth of Liberia and its people.

He named water and electricity as the two major important things that the Ellen Johnson Sirleaf led Government has in his wisdom failed to prioritize and achieve over the past seven years.
