Bong County senior senator Jewel Howard-Taylor has questioned the decision of the House of Representatives to declare former acting Monrovia City Mayor Mary Broh as "non-governmental material."
The House of Representatives early this year declared Madam Broh as a non-governmental material for reportedly preventing the imprisonment of former Montserrado County Superintendent Grace T. Kpaan.
The House ordered the imprisonment of Madam Kpaan for three days for alleged financial mal-practices, but in violation of the law, Broh along, with several women prevented the former Superintendent from going to jail.
The action by Broh infuriated members of the House of Representatives who declared both Madam Broh and Madam Kpaan as "non-governmental materials."
However, Senator Taylor said the House of Representatives does not have any authority to declare anyone "non-governmental material."
According to her, only a court of competent jurisdiction can declare someone non-governmental material after that person has been convicted of a crime.
The Bong County Senator made the statement Wednesday when she appeared on the Truth FM Breadfast Show.
She emphasized that the House was in error to declare Madam Broh a "non-governmental material."
Commenting on the re-appointment of Madam Broh, Senator Taylor said the former acting Monrovia City Mayor should be given a second chance.
She said though Madam Broh was involved in some ugly behavior while at the Monrovia City Corporation, it is important for her to be pardoned and allowed to resume work again.
She acknowledged that confirmation of Madam Broh rests with majority members of the Senate, but reiterated the need to pardon former acting City Mayor.
