Egypt Condemns Israeli Atrocities Against Palestinians

Egypt's permanent envoy to the UN Mo'taz Khalil has condemned Israel's atrocities against the Palestinian people and settlement building in occupied Palestinian lands, not to mention the siege imposed on Gaza.

Delivering Egypt's statement to the Security Council, Khalil urged the UNSC to live up to its responsibilities to end such illegitimate practices. Khalil, however, welcomed the announcement of the resumption of direct talks between Israel and the Palestinians soon.

He also welcomed a recent EU decision to exclude Israeli settlements from any future agreements with Israel, which means the pan-European body does not recognize an Israeli sovereignty over Arab lands occupied in 1967. This is a step on the right road toward a two-state solution, he praised.

He reiterated the importance of establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.
