Somalia: Mogadishu Explosion Targets Turkish Staff Building

A car laden with explosives targeted a building housing the staff of Turkish embassy in Mogadishu on Saturday, Garowe Online reports.

The car bomb attack on the Turkish residency in Mogadishu took place after a suicide car bomb rammed into the gates of the building killing three persons including a nearby Somali university student.

Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group immediately claimed the responsibility for the attack via twitter and posted on its twitter account "Mujahideen forces in Mogadishu have just carried out an operation targeting a group of Turkish diplomats in Hodon district".

Somali Police official, Col. Mohamed Ahmed who spoke to the media in Mogadishu said Al Shabaab terror group organized this type of heinous attack "A civilian and two bombers were killed in the attack and several persons were injured".

Turkish embassy staff carried the wounded persons including three Turkish security personnel on ambulance.

Turkish government condemned the attack in the "strongest term possible" and Turkish foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu wrote on his twitter feed that he sends a condolence to the family of the innocent victim.

Turkish government stepped up its involvement in Somalia in 2011, dispatched diplomatic mission led by Turkish Ambassador to Somalia Kani Torun to Mogadishu and constructed and rehabilitated public hospitals and schools in Mogadishu.
