Kenya: Driver in Githurai Accident Charged

A matatu driver was yesterday charged in a Nairobi court with causing death of four people by dangerous driving at Githurai 45 roundabout in Nairobi on Thursday evening.

Kariuki Mwarangu denied the charges before magistrate Kiarie Waweru, who ordered him remanded in police custody for two weeks until detectives complete investigations. This followed an application by court prosecutor, Onemus Towett, that more charges may be preferred against Mwarangu since the number of deaths from the accident is rising.

He said the police need more time to complete investigations before granting the accused bond pending hearing. Mwarangu was accused of causing the accident on July 25 at about 5.30pm, at Githurai 45 round-about in Nairobi. The case will be mentioned on August 5.
