Eritrea: Inhabitants of Gerbet Administrative Area to Promote Irrigation Farming On the Basis of Micro-Dams in the Area

Geleb — The inhabitants of Gerbet Administrative area, Geleb sub-zone said that they would promote irrigation farming on the basis of micro-dams in the area.

Mr. Mahmoud Mohammed Shibot, an exemplary farmer, pointed out that he is in a position to expand the scope of his farm in line with the construction of a micro-dam in the area, and that he is presently watering his fruits and vegetables through 3 water pumps, besides his apicultural activities.

Likewise, Mohammed-Seid Mohammed-Saleh stated that the micro-dams have made remarkable impact in enriching water resources in the area. He further indicated that the farmers there are striving to meet local demand for fruits and vegetables, and called on agriculture experts to enhance their advisory role in connection with cultivation of economically strategic crops.

Mr. Adem Ali, wood enclosure guard, disclosed on his part that enrichment of underground water in the locality has given rise to flourishing of vegetation, and that guards are working with diligence in safeguarding trees.

Mr. Abdalla Yegin Idris, Administrator of the area, explained that sustainability of potable water supply for livestock and humans could be attained following the construction of the micro-dams, the effect of which in irrigation farming has also become significant.
