Photo: Mutula Kilonzo Jr Voters in Kenya's Makueni County went to the polls early Friday (July 26th) to elect a new senator in by-elections, Kenya's Capital FM reported.
Candidate Mutula Kilonzo Junior's name was added to the ballot at the last minute following a High Court ruling last Friday barring his sister Kethi Kilonzo from contesting in the election.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) began manually adding Kilonzo's name to each paper ballot beginning Thursday morning, and had airlifted ballots to just Kibwezi East and Kibwezi West constituencies by nightfall. Ballots for the Mbooni, Makueni, Kaite and Kilome constituencies were transported by road in the evening.
IEBC Chief Executive Officer James Oswago reassured voters that the altered ballots would in no way compromise the fairness of the election.
However, rival candidate John Harun Mwau accused the IEBC of conspiring to highlight Kilonzo's name, and said he would contest the election results, Kenya's The Standard reported.
