Libya: Leading Libya Activist Shot Dead

Benghazi — A prominent Libyan political activist and two senior security officials have been shot dead in the restive eastern city of Benghazi.

Abdul salam Elmessmary was driving home after Friday prayers when a gray sedan intercepted his car and a gunman emerged, shooting him at close range, Benghazi security official said.

A retired air force colonel and a senior police officer were also killed in separate attacks, the official added.

The killing of Elmessmary in Benghazi's Al-birkah appears to have been the first political activist assassinated.
