The Current State of social economic hardship is gradually reaching a boiling point; that's undeniably realistic. Most Liberians are bitter and frustrated with the performance of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf's second and final reign on power. She's already lost the war on corruption and appears unresponsive to the social and economic needs of the very people who elected her twice into office (2005 and 2011). Yet, she's more loyal to her family and friends in government than taking the appropriate administrative decisions or actions against individuals including some family members and friends who are intrinsically responsible for some of the problems we face today.
This Year's Independence Day celebration has come and gone, but speeches made by orators if analyzed, the reality is that the President must buckle up and abandon the family-friendship connection or else there could be resentment from the angry people of Liberia. These people are resilient and have inner tenacity to endue; but not forever.
At The Celebration marking the 166th independence of Liberia held in Bomi, Gbarpolu and Cape Mount Counties, the administration of President Sirleaf came under stern criticisms from the Orator, Chairman of the ruling Unity Party, Cllr. Varney Sherman. The erudite Liberian Lawyer came down hard on the president's government, criticizing corruption, calling for the full implementation of the TRC report [although he vowed to challenge the illegal aspects of the recommendations in a court of competent jurisdiction], saying poverty has become alarming. Cllr. Sherman's statement on July 26 was strong and unprecedented for the party's chairman to speak the way he did. The President should accept the Orator's speech in good faith because in the past, she threw 'punches'; therefore, she must accept the hard truths about the manner in which this government has sloppily treated the TRC report. President Sirleaf and some officials of her government were indicted by the commission which apparently makes it difficult for the full implementation of the findings and recommendations.
In His Statement, the Liberian lawyer said while it is true that certain aspects of the TRC recommendations are illegal, however, he thinks that the implementation of other aspects of the recommendations are cardinal to the attainment of lasting peace and genuine reconciliation in Liberia. Serving as Orator at programs marking the official celebration of this year's Independence Day in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, the veteran Corporate Lawyer said millions were spent on the works of the TRC, and as such, all of its recommendations should not be disregarded by the government.
We Believe The TRC report is critical to the attainment of durable peace and stability. In fact, there can be no peace without social justice; therefore it becomes the responsibility of UP led government to put the TRC issue on the pedestal. If the government refuses or ignores the calls of Cllr. Sherman and other well-meaning Liberians, the next government could consider prosecuting those indicted by the TRC, including President Sirleaf.
Some Of Those who supported the 14 years conflict and carried out the carnage of innocent people are among us today; they must not go with impunity; no matter how long it takes. We've said before that prosecution as contained in the recommendation of the TRC is the best way Liberians can deal with the problem of impunity once and for all.
We Believe That the President was elected to implement certain policies, programs and reports that would address issues of conflict, poverty and socio-economic deprivation that are confronting Liberians. As a consequence of the situation, some of our citizens have turned to beggars; others are engaged in all sort of societal ills just to make ends meet. Madam President, we encourage you to solve the problems facing your people; and please don't forget about the TRC report. The implementation of the TRC report is the best way to deal with impunity.
