Liberia: Orator Backs TRC Implementation

The Orator of Liberia's 166th Independence Day has backed the full implementation of recommendations of the defunct Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) reports.

Cllr. Varney G. Sharman said while it is true that certain aspects of the TRC recommendations are illegal, however, the implementation of other aspects of the recommendations are cardinal to the attainment of lasting peace and genuine reconciliation in Liberia.

Serving as Orator at program marking the official celebration of this year's Independence Day in Tubmanburg, Bomi County, the veteran Corporate Lawyer vowed to offer his services in assisting the Government of Liberia to challenge some of the illegal aspects of the TRC recommendations in a court of competent jurisdiction.

Cllr. Sherman said millions were spent on the works of the TRC, and as such, all of its recommendations should not be disregarded by the government.

The TRC was birthed through a Comprehensive Peace Accor (CPA) in 2003 in the Ghanaian capital, Accra. The Commission was established to investigate the causes of the civil war and present recommendations for the forward march of the nation and its people after years of civil unrest.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Liberia (TRC) presented its final report containing findings, determinations and recommendations made by the Commission to the National Legislature.

The report contains major findings on the root causes of the conflict, including the impact of the conflict on women, children and the generality of the Liberian society; responsibility for the massive commission of Gross Human Rights Violations (GHRV), and violations of International Humanitarian Law (IHL), International Human Rights Law (IHRL) as well as Egregious Domestic activities.

The TRC also held that all warring factions are responsible for the commission of gross human rights violations in Liberia, including war crimes, crimes against humanity, and that they should be prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction.

However, since the Commission completed its mandate and several recommendations presented the Liberian government, the implementation of those recommendations has been dormant with some terming the report as 'trash."

But Cllr. Sherman said even after ten years of peace and stability, the wounds of the country's deadly civil wars are still fresh in the minds of the people; stressing that: "You know that peace is not necessarily the absence of war... "

The former Liberia Action Party (LAP) presidential candidate in the 2005 general and presidential elections, now Chairman of the ruling Unity Party (UP), reminded President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf that she was elected by the people of Liberia to set the examples of good governance that is wealthy of emulation by her successors.

"You were elected because Liberians believed that of all the contestants for the presidency of this country; you were the best prepared and most qualified to be the pace setter for the transformation of our country and the fulfillment of their individual and collective dreams... " Cllr. Sherman said.

He said on the basis of this, and what she has done over the last seven years, it was imperative and absolutely imperative that the president and her government engage in policies and programs that will make significant difference in the lives and livelihood of ordinary Liberian people, some of whom he said are already getting frustrated.

The UP Chairman said while he does not differ with Liberians who believe that the major cause of the 14 years civil war was a problem between two counties, or two tribes of Liberia; he strongly believes that the major cause of the conflict was poverty and social economy deprivation that was being faced by majority of the people.

Cllr. Sherman said despite two cycles of general and presidential elections in Liberia, the social challenges which face the people of Liberia are still very huge, with some citizens even wanting to give up hope due to the burden of situations they are experiencing in the country.
