1st TV bills itself as "Zimbabwe's first independent television station". Based in South Africa, the station began broadcasting on 19 July. The launch "at least 12 days preceding Zimbabwe's harmonized election on 31 July 2013 sent a lot of tongues wagging," wrote a Zimbabwean blogger recently.
The country's media landscape has long been dominated by the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), run by the state - a state that's been headed by President Robert Mugabe for the last 33 years.
