Kenya: Equity Chief's Sh100 Million Gift to Meru University

The Equity Bank CEO James Mwangi has donated Sh100 million for the construction of a science and technology complex at Meru University of Science and Technology.

Mwangi, who is the chancellor of the university, was speaking during the institution's first graduation ceremony where he said the project will help in inthe attainment of the Vision 2030.

He further called for a partnership between the county government, ministry of agriculture and the business community to help raise the Sh400 million needed to complete the construction.

"I would wish that for every one shilling I put into this university the government gives me three. I will expect the same from the business community and the county government", said Mwangi.

He also challenged the teaching faculty in the university to consider furthering their studies to PHD level where he promised to encourage at least 77 percent of the staff to have achieved the level within five years of his term.

He also directed the management of Equity Bank to absorb 20 best students who had graduated from the university as employees of the university to be part of the already 8,000 staff employed by the bank directly.
