Kenya defeated Burundi in straight sets to emerge overall winners in the men's FIVB World Championships African Group "H" qualifiers as the event ended at MTN Arena, Lugogo, Kampala yesterday.
It was an easy win for the Kenyan team as they overwhelmed Burundi 25-15, 25-15 and 25-17 to confirm their position as Group "H" winners.
The opening minutes of the first set were closely contested with both teams fighting to score early points. The teams tied at 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and 7-7 and Burundi had a narrow 8-7 lead at the first technical time out.
Kenya bounced back with characteristic powerful attacks by Philip Maiyo, Sila Makiso, Mike Chemos and Saul Wafula to come back into the match and take 14-9 lead before taking a 16-10 advantage at the second time out.
Kenya took the set 25-15. Like the opening set, the second stage of the match was closely contested and Kenya took a one-point lead at ther first technical time out and then opened a five-point gap at the next time out.
Kenya maintained form to claim the set 25-15. Kenya dominated the third set, leading 6-2 and 16-12 at the technical time outs before sealing the match 25-17. The tournament featured Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya and Burundi and was played on league format where the top three qualified for the next round.
