Liberia: Stop Tension Against Local Govt. Officials - Sieh Urges Legislators

Former Information Minister, Cletus Sieh, has called on members of the House of Representatives to ease tension between it and some local government officials.

The former MICAT Boss told reporters recently that members of the three branches of government need to exercise some degree of flexibility and tolerance, so as to enhance smooth governance.

Mr. Sieh: "The tension between legislators and local government officials must stop. This is one government, and it must be a united government, if we want to consolidate peace. A house divided cannot stand."

Recently, the House of Representatives ordered the incarceration of Sinoe County Superintendent, Milton Teahjay for what they called misapplication of County Development Fund and also obstructing the function of Sinoe County Representative, Hon. Matthew Zarzar.

At the same time, Mr, Sieh said Liberians are not enjoying genuine peace, but 'cosmetic peace'.

Mr. Sieh said a country with long years history of civil conflict cannot gain reconciliation over night when the leaders are not taking into consideration the economic impact on the people, which according to him, is key to the stability and peace of any country.

Mr. Sieh: "Our leaders who are managing this economy must buckle up, let our fiscal policy and monetary policy managers put their act together and create jobs for our young people. Job creation has eluded us and when bulk of the population is unemployed, they cannot pay their children school fees, when our mothers are leaving our fathers because papa cannot take care of the needs of the home, there can be no peace."

He furthered that there can be no genuine peace when people steal money and shamelessly advertised their wealth while many children go to bed hungry. Those who pillage our country's resources need to face the full weight of the law.

According to Mr. Sieh, "There is no unity among Liberians. There is no unity in our land. We cannot afford to remain divided like this. we are divided on virtually everything. there is division amongst our three branches of government, especially the Legislature and Executive. There is even division amongst members of the Honorable House of Senate and the House of Representatives. There is division in our politics, were in the welfare and well being of the masses is no longer our concern."

Speaking when he served as a keynote speaker at the 13th graduation ceremony of the Calvary Chapel Mission School in Paynesville, Mr. Sieh called on the 132 graduates to take courage and 'reach for the goal amidst the stumbling block'.

Mr. Sieh has however called on all Liberians to foster unity and reconcile for the purpose of developing the country.
