Liberia: Sick Juror Ejected

The presiding judge of Criminal Court 'D' trying 19 suspected mercenaries who were implicated in cross border attack in neighboring Cote d'Ivoire in 2011 and 2012 has ejected a juror for his ailment .

Judge Yussif Kaba said that one of the regular trial jurors was seriously sick and needed medical attention as a result he was ejected from the panel of jury.

"He is going to seek medical attention and will not be allowed to hear this case again in keeping with law. We are sorry for this but he will be replaced by one of the alternative jurors which is provided under our law", Judge Kaba pointed out.

At the same time reports coming from the jurors' sequestrate quarter which is heavily guarded by armed Police Emergency Response Unit (ERU) along with others at the basement of the Temple of Justice say one of the trial jurors fell off over the weekend.

During trial the jurors through foremen complained to the judge that the sequestrated area provided for them was unhealthy and as such they were faced with serious problems.

"We are troubled by mosquitos every night and getting sick daily. We did eat on time. We have problems with meals as a result we buy our own food. "Moreover, no good medical attention. As we speak now some of our colleagues are not well. We are totally discouraged by this unhealthy condition of the sequestrated area ", he pointed out.

Sources hinted our reporter Friday that doctors from the Ministry Health hurriedly came to restore hope after medical attention.

Court officers at Criminal Court 'D' assigned police officers to the jurors' sequestrated quarter could not confirm or denied the issue.

Judge Kaba expresse shock over the jurors' concerns and promised to meet with the authority in order to address these issues.

However, he urged the jurors to remain committed to their civil duty because the public eyes were on them.

The illness of several jurors come at the time when state prosecutors were still producing evidence in the trial that will resumed today at Criminal Court 'D' Temple Justice.
