The Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) has imposed a two-year ban on Adama Ndure, a wrestler. This decision according to the Association was taken after the Gambian wrestler refused to participate in the recently held four-nation ECOWAS wrestling championship hosted in Banjul without any reason(s) advanced.
According to GWA, after making due consultations at executive level, it has finally decided to impose a two-year international wrestling ban and a one year domestic ban on the wrestler; the bans will run concurrently. In a press release issued to Observer Sports, the secretary general of the association, Habbibou Nyassi pointed out that the Association is the supreme body for wrestling in the country and will not tolerate any misbehavior from any wrestler that will retard the sport; and that the integrity of the national team will not be compromised. He said Ndure was expected to behave with a full national character so as to represent The Gambia in both national and international competitions but he (Ndure) humiliated the entire nation when his name was called up on several occasions to fight but was nowhere to be found. "The nation is thousand times bigger than you as a mere human being and national duty shall be honoured and respected whenever (one is) called for. The ministers, dignitaries, the executives of this Association, the journalists, National Organizing Committee members, amateur/supports and the participating countries all raised eyebrows towards your despicable behavior which caused a big shame to The Gambia as the host," the Association added in a letter sent to the wrestler.
The Wrestling Association's SG further stressed that during the period that Ndure will be serving his ban, he will have to forfeit his wrestling licencee to the Association and warned him to comply and respect the decision of the ruling body.
Nyassi also used the opportunity to warn other wrestlers particularly those in the national team to respect national duty/events, noting that the GWA will not entertain anyone trying to put the name of the sport into disrepute.
