Kenya: MP Wants State to Hire Teachers

Union officials issue fresh strike notice over teachers' July pay.

A member of the parliamentary committee on education has said the responsibility of employing Early Childhood Education teachers should be left to the national government.

Bomet women's representative Cecilia Ngetich yesterday said county governments do not have the capacity to handle the function.

Ng'etich said that though the provision of basic education is constitutionally under the devolved governments, counties lack proper structures to ensure the process of hiring is efficient.

She said some counties have not set standards on how they will hire the teachers, while others have not shown commitment of the same.

"The house committee has assessed situations in all counties and we strongly recommend that this role be taken up by the TSC until the devolved governments put proper structures in place," Ng'etich said.

"Once the counties have the capacities and clear standards are in place, the role can be devolved."
