Union officials issue fresh strike notice over teachers' July pay.

LAIKIPIA Deputy Governor Gitonga Kabugi has called for the immediate gazettement of the devolved functions

Kabugi said this will allow the county governments to govern effectively and put the necessary structures in place on time.

Speaking in Nanyuki town a few hours after arriving from the governors and senator's workshop in Kwale county, Kabugi said the functions should be gazetted within one week as it is getting late.

"Due to lack of clear functions of the county government, we don't know how to deal with water problems which is a crisis in this county," he said.

He said failure to gazette the functions soon will put devolution at risk.

Kabugi however said the Laikipia county government is ready to meet the pledges it promised during campaigns to take the county to greater heights.

Area MP Antony Mutahi urged the Teachers Service Commission to pay teachers their July salary.

He said failure to pay the teachers who participated in the strike will create another crisis in the education sector.

Mutahi, who is a member of the parliamentary committee on education, said the teachers strike should not warrant the withholding of their salaries.

"It was not a crime to strike, they have their rights. Let them be paid their salaries to avoid another crisis," he said.
