Kenya: Drainage Woes Dog Residents

Residents of Free Area estates in Nakuru are living in fear of contracting water born diseases due to poor drainage at the densely populated estate.

The affected areas are Kaptembow, Mwariki, White house and Mawanga estate.

One resident, Ibrahim Njihia, said that most of the roads in the area had been rendered impassible due to stagnate water blocking the road. He said because of poor drainage, most of the houses in the area are flooded with water from sewers.

"We are having a hard time accessing the roads here because most of them have flooded by the rain water" he said.

The residents observed that, the stagnate water in the estate had become an eye sore to the local residents and now they want the county government to move in and clean the mess.

Njihia also said that, the current on going rains had wrecked havoc to many households in the area where some had been submerged by the rain water.

"Since we don't have good drainage, the sewer water some times ends up getting into our houses because we are on the lower side" he said

He further urged the county government to improve the drainage system in the estate so as to avert any possibility of an outbreak disease.

In this year budget for Nakuru county, there was no specific allocation for improvement of drainage in the county.
