CABINET Secretary for Agriculture Felix Koskei has petitioned the ministry of roads to repair all impassable roads under its jurisdiction to reduces transportation cost of farm produce.
Koskei said most roads in the county have been rendered impassable by the recent long rains and neglect from relevant authorities.
" Farmers in this county are incurring losses becase their produce cannot reach the market at the right time due to the poor state of the roads." Said Koskei adding most transporters were avoiding the the county due to heavy losses incurred as a result of wear and tear.
Kosgey was speaking over the weekend at a farmers forum in Chebororwa in Elgeyo-Marakwet County.
The cabinet secretary said that the Agricultural sector contribute to 25% of the countries economic income and urged residents to put more effort in their work.
"As a sector we are going round the country and empower farmers on different kind of various farming methods ." said the Cabinet secretary.
The county is the major producer of ,Mangoes, paws ,Tomatoes and onions which get spoiled since they are perishable.
Farmers have in the past been complaining over the lack of support from the government in the construction of the roads saying the situation have forced them to sell their produce at a throw away price.
" We will not sell our produce to the middle men who use extended bag instead of the usual 90 kg bag, complained John Kipyego a farmer.
