Egypt: Islamist Alliance Tells EU's Ashton 'Genocide' Must Stop

The National Alliance to Support Legitimacy, an Islamist bloc that groups the Muslim Brotherhood and its allies formed to demand the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Mursi, has reaffirmed its rejection to what it described as the "military coup."

In a statement released on Monday, the alliance told European Union Foreign Policy Chief Catherine Ashton, who is in Cairo to discuss Egypt's latest developments with representatives from different factions, that "the genocide and detentions launched by the bloody military coup's leaders" must stop.

It told Ashton that the people will not go home until "constitutional legitimacy is restored and Egypt is back on the right path."

It insisted that the pro-Mursi protests have been peaceful, denying all allegations of violence and describing them as "lies".

The pro-Mursi protesters have occupied Nasr City's Rabaa al-Adaweya square for roughly a month, demanding the reinstatement of their democratically president and condemning the army that ousted him.

Egypt's army ousted the Islamist president on July 3, following mass demonstrations that were held across the country.
