Uganda: Mengo SS Tops Makerere Admissions

Mengo SS yesterday found themselves in the rare position of topping private admissions to Makerere University, with 195 students ahead of St Mary's SS Kitende at 178.

The statistics exclude students admitted to Makerere University Business School, which will soon evolve into an independent university. This situation is bound to boost morale at Mengo SS, who have distinguished themselves as the best-performing day school in the country, over the last five years.

In the past St Mary's SS Kitende were on top of admissions at Makerere. Kitende was followed by Namirembe Hillside in third place, Lubiri SS, Old Kampala SS, Buddo SS, Gombe SS, St. Mary's Kitende SS (Annex), Merryland High School, Lugazi Mixed and Makerere College School; rounding up the schools that sent 100 plus students to the country's oldest university.

Gauged by programmes, St Mary's SS Kitende topped admissions to the Bachelor of laws degree and the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, as is the norm, while King's College Budo reclaimed their pole position in the Civil engineering discipline.

Mengo Ss were firmly on top in Business Administration, usually not the forte of Kitende. Just like in the public admissions, Uganda Martyrs SS Namugongo topped admissions to the Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. Most of the rest of the schools that appeared on the list had just one student each.
