Orange Uganda has unveiled what it calls the fastest internet - the 4G LTE (Fourth Generation Long-Term Evolution) to the Ugandan market.
According to Orange Uganda Chief Technical Officer Godfrey Kisekka, the beauty with their product is that the user will be able to use a mobile handset that supports both data and voice services.
"The fourth generation internet is the fastest that Ugandans need. The one we have been having - the third generation - was slower," Kisekka said.
To use the product, one needs the LTE enabled phones. With this 4G, Orange joins other players in the telecom industry that have also introduced the internet, including MTN and Smile.
Orange says the network covers all the major towns around the country, unlike some of its competitors'.
Orange will announce the cost of their internet soon. While major telecoms are coming up with what they call fastest internet, the cost of internet in the country remains the highest in the region.
Orange says the problem is due to the tariffs that Kenyans are charging them for hosting their optic fibre cable.
"Uganda being a landlocked country, Kenyan's (high) charges have an effect on the final cost of the internet," Kisekka explained.
