Ambrose Tumwesigye aka Tycoon is a budding artiste. Although I use "budding", this guy is behind the current club banger, Mobile Money.
Two weeks ago he released peligisa and already it is dominating the airwaves. Quick Talk sought him out on a Sunday evening.
Of all names, you decided to call yourself Tycoon, why?
[With a small laugh]... I am very musically-talented and because of that I am going to be the tycoon of the industry; not in terms of money but in terms of music. I am going to be able to produce, write, edit and sing at the same time.
The reason I am called Tycoon is because my father gave me the name when I was a boy and my family has grown up calling me that, my father says it will encourage me to work hard, because how can a tycoon be broke? [Amen! Talk about a father who walks by faith and not by sight!]
Tell me about yourself:
I am 23, in second year at Makerere University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music. I currently have four songs and I record from Monster Records. [Quick Talk stops him and reminds him it is not an advert; dude was about to tell Quick Talk his hall of residence!]
In your song Mobile Money, you sing about how dating a Kampala girl now depends on mobile money because they are always asking men to send them some money, how did you reach that conclusion?
I see this all the time. Before, girls used to ask for money physically but these days, when you take a girl out once, when you call her up the second time to find out how she is doing, she will say she is fine and then claim to have a problem but will not ask for money directly.
You know their 'independent woman' speech? She will come up after two days to say she found money to fix the problem but it is not enough and she will be like, "kale I am stuck; can send me some ka mobile money? I am going to refund it." [Ho hoo... from one detoothed brother to another!]
What about your girlfriend(s)? Do they ask for mobile money?
Ehhh... Before we go any further I have only one girl and we have been together since the start of campus and I love her a lot.
Tell me about this girl and what's her name?
All I can say is that she is pursing a degree in Development Studies, she is also in her second year but I can't say her name here because we are always on and off.
So, you are not sure about her.
I am, but you know relationships, they are too much work and now my music has her complaining a lot because I get so many female fans whenever I have a small performance in clubs or bars.
Talking about female fans, when was the last time you got tested for HIV with your girlfriend?
It was last year in April and the funny thing was that I was the one who came up with the idea. You see, me I was sure about myself but I wasn't sure about her [Quick Talk hopes after the test, he can now send her mobile money freely.] Anyway, the results came out clean.
So, that means that you have been enjoying things live with no protection?
[Laughs out loud and is shy to answer, so Quick Talk says he assumes that his response means a yes]. Actually I told her that we use a condom since we are not yet ready for a kid; we are still students, but she threw a tantrum over that, arguing that the condoms make her get an irritation [Quick Talk's jaw almost touches the floor at the answer.]
Which type of condoms were you buying, dude?
[He can't help but laugh, and then asks if Quick Talk is really a journalist - what kind of questions are these? - Quick Talk pulls out his ID and even informs him that he is a Mass Communications graduate before he can answer:]
I bought Rough Rider, then Bare Back and when I brought Life Guard she even threatened to slap a sex ban on me. I had to give in to her demands. [And women still want emancipation yet they rule the world; how I wish they knew that. The health marketing groups' work is clearly still cut out for them!]
Last word.
I am going to first give my new songs time to grow and not rush back to the studio because I am going for my last year.
[Quick Talk throws in some fatherly advice and tells him not to let the Mobile Money hit throw him off the main agenda and to make sure he doesn't get the girl pregnant, stay faithful and ensure he graduates.]
