Gambia: Whereabouts of Justice Joseph Wowo Still Unknown

The whereabouts of Justice Joseph Wowo, the former Chief Justice of the Gambia, who was in office for barely one month before his removal on 18 July 2013, is still unknown. When his former residence at the Brufut Gardens (TAF Estates) was visited by this reporter, he still found the place empty and locked and being guarded by two personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU), with the official vehicle that was allocated to him packed inside. Enquiring from some neighbours, they said they have not seen Justice Wowo since the announcement of his removal.

It could be recalled that Foroyaa reported that neighbours informed that the former Chief Justice was picked up with all his personal belongings soon after his removal from office.

According to sources, in the morning of Saturday 20 July, Justice Wowo was seen returning to his residence accompanied. He was then seen taking out his belongings. They then departed but eye witnesses did not know where they were headed to.

The Nigerian High Commission was visited. The Deputy Nigerian High Commissioner Mr. Faruk said, they do not know the whereabouts of the former Chief Justice Wowo. Inquiring whether they have seen him after his removal, Mr. Faruk said they did not see him after his removal and they do not know his whereabouts. Joseph Wowo was appointed as the Chief Justice of The Gambia in late June 2013 and removed from office on Thursday, 19 July, 2013.
