Liberia: River Gee Supt. in Corruption Web?

Despite recent reiteration by President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf during the July 26 celebrations to deal with corrupt officials, it seems that the threat is falling on deaf ears with some of her confidants, who are at the peak of government doing their own thing. One such official is River Gee County Superintendent, Daniel Johnson, who has come under serious financial microscope in the county.

Recently, a citizen of River Gee Isaac Cheapoo currently based in Monrovia, fearlessly accused Superintendent Johnson of misapplying over US$641,000.00 intended for the county. Speaking to this paper Tuesday, the River Gee County youth advocate said that he was seriously disappointed over the manner in which Supt. Johnson is managing the county fund.

He said Supt. Johnson, who he expects to understand the plight of citizens in the county, has taken interest in misusing the little resources President Sirleaf was providing for the development of River Gee. Cheapoo said that on several occasions, he had engaged Supt. Johnson and stressed the need to wisely expend funds the county has received.

According to him, the superintendent should stop putting 'self- interest' above the county, noting that as a prominent son of the county, he will not sit supinely and allow things go the way they are going in River Gee.

Cheapoo, a tough-talking youth advocate said that he fears nothing even if it will mean that he goes to prison for the truth, he is prepared to take the lashes, but will continue to expose ills in the county until those in authority will see reason to transform their behavior.

"Look, let me tell you something Mr. Journalist, President Madam Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is doing her best but there are others that do not want the President's effort to be seen.

"I mean you do not expect the President to take the place of the Almighty God like being in every place and see the ill performance of her officials. It is we that have to signal her and that's what I am doing", he narrated.

According to him, he respects Superintendent Johnson as his big brother, but he's trying to correct his mistakes and should not be seen as hatred or confusion. Mr Cheapoo said since the Superintendent took over the county, there is nothing that he can boast of as achievement.

When Supt. Johnson was contacted via mobile, he said that the allegation level against him is far from truth, adding that Mr. Cheapoo is fighting a proxy battle for someone, who wants to contest in the county and that his allegation is complete 'none sense'.
