Ethiopia: More Finance for African Smallholder Farmers

Ministry of Agriculture said Ethiopia has best experience in extensively financing smallholder farmers to make sustainable development in the agriculture sector.

The 3rd meeting of Alliance for Commodity Trade in Eastern and Southern Africa was held in Addis Ababa on 31 Tuesday, 2013.

The meeting that attracts private investors, governments, NGOs and smallholder farmers discusses on how to add values to agricultural products in the region.

According to State Minister of Agriculture, Wondyirad Mandefro financing smallholder farmers is a way out to ensure sustainable development in the agriculture sector. Ethiopia has best experience in doing so, he noted.

The meeting sees smallholder farmers in the alliance can make better gains if their agricultural products get exported with value added to them.

Financing exportable agricultural products in order to add value increases the market share of smallholder farmers in the regional and global markets.

The meeting exchanged experiences of countries in the region and shared views to help improve economic integration in the region.
