Liberia: Peace Still Fragile - Former Senator

Former Bong County Senator Franklin Obed Siakor has described Liberia's peace as still fragile, while the country was heavily dependent on donor funding to survive. Former Siakor disclosed that though it was not possible for a nation to fully stand on its own without assistance from other countries, Liberia was overly depending on other countries for sustainability.

The former Bong County senator believed that Liberia still heavily relied on the People's Republic of China for the construction of schools and roads, and on Japan and America for loans, which clearly shows the country's limitations in its independence.

The Liberty Party Political leader further noted that it was impossible for the country to regain its independence, admonishing Liberians to concentrate more on developing the bad systems. "It is very difficult for us to be talking about regaining our independence when we are one hundred and sixty-six years old; what we can do is to improve the system we have in our country," the former senator advised.

Siakor, who has already declared to seek election in 2014, added that past leaders who were not Liberians did not think about the present day generation, but only thought about what they could get from the government for them and their families, stressing that if past leaders were to think twice about the development of Liberia, the brutal civil war could not be experienced.

The Liberty Party political leader urged Liberians to closely follow the way their country is being governed, as corruption remains on the lips of every Liberian.

He laid specific emphasis on the educational system, which, he said, will enable Liberians understand more about their country and what it means to be patriotic. He said once there was better education system for all Liberians, the nation would be developed, reducing poverty in the country. The former senator believed that the government has poorly invested in the education of Liberians.
