Gambia: Gamcoy 15 Back From Darfur

The first batch of Gamcoy 15, numbering 94, Monday touched down at the Banjul International Airport after a successful six-month peacekeeping mission in the Sudanese troubled region of Darfur. The chief of Defence Staff (CDS) of the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF), Lieutenant General Ousman Bargie, received the personnel on arrival at the foot of the aircraft.

Addressing the men and women in uniform, CDS Bargie on behalf of the commander-in chief-of the armed Forces, welcomed the soldiers back, and expressed gratitude to the Almighty Allah for the successful completion of their mission.

CDS Bargie hailed the contingent for performing well during their mission, saying there were no [negative] reports concerning Gamcoy 15. He expressed delight that the soldiers comported themselves well, performed their duties diligently, and also learnt a lot in Darfur.

"I congratulate all of you for exceptional duty. This is what it takes to be professionals in the armed forces; this is what we expected from all of you to serve humanely and come home with flying colours," he concluded.

Meanwhile, the first batch of Gamcoy 16, who took over the baton from Gamcoy 15, also left the shores of The Gambia for the restive region of Sudan where they will serve for the next six months.
