The federal government has raised a committee to quicken the removal of Nigeria from the list of nations involved in the Financial Action Taskforce (FATF) on anti-money laundering and counter financing terrorism regimes.
During its maiden meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja yesterday, the committee headed by Vice President Mohammed Namadi Sambo, promised to ensure that Nigeria's name was removed from the list. Sambo said the government believed that with the measures already put in place regarding laws and regulations, the nation ought not to continue to remain on the public statement of the taskforce.
Charging members of the committee to be committed to their mandate, the vice president said: "I urge you all to work hard towards ensuring that we maintain the integrity of our financial system through effective implementation of laws and regulations against financial improprieties."
He therefore, directed that the country's international airports particularly the enforcement of currency regime declaration by travellers, be immediately sanitised.
Chairman of the Presidential Committee on FATF, Stephen Oronsaye recalled that his committee had made considerable progress in ensuring that Nigeria was removed from the list, especially in areas of strict implementation of rules and regulations in the financial system.
The Financial Action Task Force is expected to visit Nigeria in September with a view to facilitating the delisting of Nigeria from its books.
