Libya - ANHRI Condemns the Assassination of the Lawyer and the Prominent Dissent Abdulsalam El-Mesmari

Cairo — The Arabic Network for Human Rights Information (ANHRI), denounces the continuing murder operations and the physical liquidation, politically motivated, in Libya that were escalated to reach the political activists after number of operations that targeted number of security and army leaders who joined the revolution against the regime of Qaddafi.

As on Friday afternoon of July 26, the human rights lawyer and the prominent political activist "El-Mesmari" who is known for opposing the Muslim Brotherhood in Libya.

Mesmari is a human rights lawyer and a political activist who born in 1968 and he was among the important dissents of the dictator "Qaddafi" and he established the coalition of February 17 after the broke out of the revolution aiming to coordinate between the various political powers during the revolution.

After the end of the Friday prayer and while he returning back to his house in Barakah district on foot, so about 1:30 pm, two persons, probably they were in a car, shot him in his heart before he reach the hospital of "Gala" in Benghazi city where he gave the last breath.

The fact of assassinating him came after days from appearing on a TV shows on July 24, while he was speaking about the crimes that are committed out the frame of law; recently the assassination of Gen. Abdulfatah Yunis, the leader of the Libyan opposition army as he was assassinated in July 2011. He also criticized the MB and consider it responsible for spreading the chaos in Libya. He was also known for criticizing the political Islamic trned in the media-outlets or via his accounts on the social networks

It is worth to be mentioned that he had received threatens by death against the backdrop of his political stances and he sent a threating message on his facebook to who threatens to resort to violence or assassination because of their national opinions; we tell them we will win by our peaceful moves".

He was also attacked by unknown persons in last May against the backdrop of statements in which he criticized the armed groups that siege the Libyan authorities and describe it as the groups against legitimacy.

ANHRI said that "the authorities failed until now to take the arms spread in the streets since the revolution in February 2011, which threatens the stability of Libya and threatens the people's security. It also led to the escalation of political violence in the last period, in which 20 persons of the army leaders were killed due to political motivations. Now the armed groups turned to target the political activists after it was targeting the military personnel that will threaten the peaceful political course in Libya, and storm the transition that witnessed the inability to control of the security situation in the state".

ANHRI demands the necessity to investigate the fact and identify the identity of the assailants in addition to punish them, because in case of this fact passes without punishing the actors will increase the violence in Libya.
